Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine call for new sanctions against Russia

New sanctions against Russia have been called for by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, Polish President Andrzej Duda and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

The three leaders called on the global community to “strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation due to its continued aggression against Ukraine” and also demanded that Moscow “withdraw its troops from the borders of Ukraine and Donbass”.

Lithuania and Poland declared their support for Ukraine to gain EU and NATO membership. They also confirmed “a clear commitment to further expand their cooperation on a wide range of issues, such as security, defence, economy, energy and others, including within the framework of the Lublin Triangle format”.

According to the politicians, the migration crisis on the border between Belarus and Poland was artificially created by Minsk and is a hybrid attack. In this regard, the sides expressed concern over the deterioration of the situation in their region, “which is a result, inter alia, of Russian aggression.”

“Reaffirmed a firm commitment to further strengthen European energy security and in this regard expressed deep concern about the Nord Stream 2 project, which is a challenge to the security of the European region. They expressed their readiness to act jointly to oppose the monopolisation of the European gas market by Russia, which uses energy as a geopolitical tool”, –  the communiqué said.
