Lukashenko backs ruble as common currency of the Union State

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko believes that ruble will definitely become the single currency of the Union State

According to him, there will be a third currency when Moscow and Minsk approach the use of common currency. Lukashenko once agreed on this with the first president of Russia, Boris Yeltsin. However, the common currency will definitely be called the ruble, Kommersant portal reports the words of the Belarusian leader, citing his conversation with RIA Novosti.

“Here’s the Russian ruble. Everybody wants a single currency – although when Yeltsin and I signed the agreement, we had in mind that it would be neither the Belarusian nor the Russian ruble, but some other currency. But since we have the rouble and you have the rouble, why are we making it up? Call it a thaler or something. Yes, it will be the ruble”, –  said Lukashenko.

He noted that in this case it is possible to follow the example of the European Union and create a single currency unit. But first we should create an independent investment centre, said Lukashenko.
