An immediate disintegration of the United States should not be expected, but such a prospect can already be imagined, which could not have been done at the beginning of the millennium. This opinion was expressed by columnist Max Hastings in his article for Bloomberg.
In the material, he pointed to the results of a poll at the University of Virginia, according to which 52% of voters of the former American leader Donald Trump, to some extent, favor the states that support the Republican Party to secede from the country and “form their own separate states.” At the same time, 41% of adherents of the policy of the incumbent head of the White House, Joe Biden, adhere to a similar position regarding the “democratic states”.
The author of the article pointed out that the United States has always been divided in its political views and in how citizens of certain regions prefer to lead a lifestyle.
According to Hastings, for the prospect of restoring a “peaceful political center”, the first step should be the disarmament of citizens, to which the people of America will not agree. In addition, he noted that the root of the American division is a racial problem that polarizes society. The Bloomberg columnist pointed out that such a wave of anger is accumulating in the States that it is impossible to predict where it will lead.
At the same time, Hastings assured that there would not be an immediate split in the United States, but stressed that such a development of events can now be imagined, which was not yet at the turn of the 21st century.
Earlier, on November 23, the American journalist-analyst Eric Best noted in an interview with Kupředu do minulosti that Western countries have begun to engage in self-destruction, the main problem of the United States is the obsession with the idea of hegemony.
In his opinion, the Americans do not even admit the idea that any state can surpass the United States in the military, political and economic spheres. However, according to the analyst, the moment will come very soon when the Americans want to flee the country, but it will be too late, since the borders will be closed.
According to the journalist, a similar situation can happen either because of the situation with the coronavirus, or because of the threat from Russia and China.
On September 16, Trump predicted the disappearance of the United States in three years. Since the inauguration of Joe Biden, the country has “gone downhill like never before,” he said.
Earlier in August, The Economist expert Neil Ferguson noted that the collapse of American hegemony could turn into a major world war. According to him, the United States will become hostage to a “grim” choice: to recognize the leadership of China or to attempt to defend its position.
At the same time, the columnist for The National Interest magazine Mark Katz named five signs that the United States as an empire is close to decline and its hegemony in the world is coming to an end. In particular, according to the journalist, this is indicated by the inability of the United States to win large-scale and prolonged military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
In May, Samir Sol, a historian and lecturer at the University of Montreal, also believed that today we can talk about the formation of a tripolar world due to the inability of the United States to compete with Russia and China at the same time. He pointed out that against the background of Washington’s attempts to resist Moscow and Beijing, the PRC has long become the “engine of the world economy.”
