The governor of the US state of New York, Katie Hockool, said that a state of emergency will be declared in the region until January 15, 2022, amid a significant increase in the number of coronavirus infections.
“As New York City is currently seeing the spread of COVID-19 at a rate not seen in the state since April 2020, as the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the past month has increased to over 300 per day, […] I declare a state of emergency throughout New York State by January 15, 2022”, the Hawkul order posted on the governor’s website says.
According to Johns Hopkins University, the number of cases of coronavirus infection in the United States increased over the past week by 16% to 92 thousand new cases per day.
CNN stressed that the increase in incidence has also led to an increase in the number of hospitalizations for those infected with coronavirus and deaths. In total, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, more than 48.1 million people have been infected, more than 776 thousand people have died.
