US pressure on Iran to be stepped up

The US broadcaster NBC, citing its sources, reported that the US is considering options for dealing with Iran if the talks in Vienna on the resumption of the JCPOA fail

Possible measures identified include tightening sanctions, including those targeting oil sales to China, a less ambitious interim nuclear deal, launching covert operations to sabotage Iran’s nuclear programme, strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities or supporting Israeli military action in the area.

These plans call attention to the behaviour of IAEA head Rafael Grossi, who during a recent visit to Iran described the talks as intense, and said that the parties “will resolve the outstanding issues as soon as possible”. Back in Europe, Raphael Grossi said that “despite all my efforts, the negotiations have not yielded any result.”

The point is that the IAEA`s opinion could form the basis for sanctions against Iran by the UN Security Council, or only by the US and EU, if Russia and China don`t support this tough approach at this stage.
