“Gas blackmail”: Bulgaria comments on US sanctions against NSP2

Readers of the Bulgarian newspaper Fakti have compared sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline by the United States to piracy

“The Americans will protect Europe’s energy security by stealing a European ship? This is pure piracy and an attempt to make fools of us once again”, –  wrote one reader.

According to another commentator, the sanctions by US President Joe Biden’s administration are “gas blackmail of Europe” and could become the basis for creating unfair competition in the energy market.

“Russia can retaliate. International law allows this, even recommends it as a proportionate measure. But this will not happen, Russia is a good soul, it does not need confrontation. Unlike the US,” emphasized a user nicknamed Motochristo.

Earlier, the U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Congress was provided with the report “On protection of energy security in Europe” for the possible imposition of sanctions against ships involved in the construction of “Nord Stream – 2”. China has harshly criticised US sanctions on the pipeline.
