China criticises US sanctions against Nord Stream 2

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian has said that Beijing opposes unilateral sanctions against Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline by the United States

“We are against the politicization of commercial projects, against unilateral sanctions. Such actions by the United States are pure hegemony that violates the fundamental norms of international law”, – a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said during a briefing.

He said the White House is trying to resolve international business issues under plausible pretexts solely in its own favor, completely ignoring the interests of other countries. Lijian stressed that such actions by Washington “will undoubtedly cause protests from the international community”.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that a report on “protecting Europe’s energy security” had been submitted to Congress for possible imposition of sanctions on vessels involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2. The Bundestag opposed the sanctions and called for the Russian pipeline to be launched as soon as possible.
