Media: New tensions in relations between Russia and Moldova

Inconsistency in the actions of the Moldovan authorities has led to distrust on the part of Russia and the formation of unnecessary tension, Komsomolskaya Pravda writes

“As Russian commentators say, Chisinau is playing a ‘double game’. On the one hand, it is proposed to deepen cooperation with Russia and the CIS and, on the other hand, there is a demand for the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Transnistria, “largely anti-Russian rhetoric oriented towards the West is heard and destructive ideas are promoted, often directed against Moscow”, –  writes the weekly.

According to the author of the material, Sergey Tkach, unnecessary tension is re-emerging and being stimulated in the Russian-Moldovan relations today. One of the main reasons was the new participation of Moldovan President Maia Sandu in the Crimean platform.

The expert reminded that the contract between Chisinau and Gazprom includes a clause in which Moldova pledged to “ensure decisions on the allocation of additional financial resources for the payment by the consumers of natural gas from the right bank of the Nistru River for the gas supplies in October and November 2021”.

“These are not small sums given that gas was supplied to Moldova in October at $790 per thousand cubic meters. If Moldovagaz does not receive the money necessary to pay for the consumed blue fuel, will there be a new phase of the energy crisis?”, – the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper noted.

Russian senator Aleksey Pushkov considers that one should not be surprised by the Moldovan authorities’ behaviour when it comes to gas payments. According to the politician, Gazprom has not only a legal, but also a full moral right to suspend the supply of gas in the absence of payment from Chisinau.
