Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will meet in Brussels, the European Council reported.
The head of the European Council Charles Michel held a telephone conversation with leaders Pashinyan and Aliyev in connection with the aggravation of the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh and to prepare for the upcoming Eastern Partnership summit.
“During the telephone talks, the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to establish a direct line of communication at the level of defense ministers, which will serve as a mechanism for preventing incidents,” the statement said.
Michel offered to host the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Brussels within the framework of the Eastern Partnership summit in order to “discuss the situation in the region and ways to overcome tensions in the name of prosperity and stability of the South Caucasus, which are supported by the EU.”
In November of this year, the situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan became aggravated again. In Yerevan, they announced an intense skirmish between the military of the two countries, which allegedly occurred due to the attempt of the Azerbaijanis to launch an offensive in the eastern direction of the border.
