“I’m waiting for oxygen and suffocating”: a pregnant Ukrainian woman died from COVID-19

A pregnant resident of the Rivne region, before dying from COVID infection, told her mother about the negligence of doctors and an acute oxygen deficiency in the hospital.

20-year-old Elena Borovets received treatment in the Ukrainian city of Dubno, Rivne region. The young woman was seven months pregnant. In correspondence with her mother, Elena spoke about the bad attitude of doctors and the lack of oxygen, which is vital for covid patients. Later, the woman posted a correspondence with her daughter on her Facebook page

“I can’t breathe at all […] Now there is more than one in the ward: when she [the second patient] breathes, then I have little oxygen. I already fought with them here. I say that I have nothing to breathe. The manager came and said that you would then go to another hospital if you were indignant”, the girl wrote to her mother.

In addition, it became known from the reports that the doctors tried to convince the girl that it should be hard for her to breathe. Due to the lack of oxygen, Elena felt dizzy and could not sleep, as she began to choke. The pregnant girl also told her mother that the hospital runs out of oxygen very quickly, and the replacement of the balloon takes a long time.

Unfortunately, Elena and her child could not be saved. According to the newspaper “Observer”, the family doctor did not give the girl a referral for PCR testing to clarify the diagnosis, despite the fact that she had bronchial asthma. Earlier, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine announced that the country is “at the peak of the wave of coronavirus.”

As News Front previously reported, in Ukraine, despite the next wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the two largest oxygen producers stopped for preventive repairs. In total, Ukrainian hospitals need more than 340 tons of oxygen per day. In Odessa, due to the lack of oxygen for mechanical ventilation, patients are forced to be transported to other hospitals.
