US President Joe Biden will temporarily transfer his powers to Vice President Kamala Harris while he undergoes a medical procedure under anesthesia, RIA Novosti writes.
White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that the American leader will go to Walter Reed Medical Center for a physical examination, where he will undergo a routine colonoscopy. At this time, the powers of the head of state will be transferred to Harris. This will be the first time in US history that a woman will head the White House, albeit for a short time.
“As with President George W. Bush in 2002 and 2007, and in accordance with the procedure outlined in the US Constitution, President Biden will hand over power to the Vice President for a short period of time while under anesthesia,” explained Psaki.
The spokeswoman added that the administration would later release a health report on Biden’s medical examination. While the American leader is under anesthesia at the medical center, Harris will work from his office in the West Wing of the White House.
