Because of visa-free travel: Putin says why migrants try to enter EU through Belarus

Migrants are trying to get into the EU through Minsk because of the visa-free entry to Belarus, said the Russian president

“Migrants used to go through other channels and there is nothing surprising that they have now gone through Belarus. Because Belarus has, as Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko explained to me, visa-free entry into the country from the countries of origin”, –  Putin said in an interview on Russia 24.

Several thousand migrants have piled up on the border between Belarus and Poland in recent weeks in the hope of entering the EU. Polish authorities have beefed up border security, pulled in the military and stopped attempts by illegal immigrants to enter the country, blaming Minsk for the migration crisis. Belarus rejects all these accusations, claiming that Poland expels migrants by force.
