Japan expresses desire to resolve Kuril ownership issue peacefully

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi has said that Tokyo intends to conclude a peace treaty with Russia, RIA Novosti reported

“Regarding the peace treaty with Russia, our direction is to resolve the issue of ownership of the four islands and conclude a peace treaty without shifting it to future generations. We will work on this based on previous joint agreements, including the agreement reached in Singapore in 2018”, –  Hayashi told a news conference.

The USSR and Japan signed a Joint Declaration in 1956. Under the document, Moscow agreed to consider handing over the islands of Habomai and Shikotan to Japan after the conclusion of a peace treaty. However, Tokyo considered the declaration only part of the solution and did not give up claims to the islands of Kunashir and Iturup.
