Trial of Mikhail Saakashvili begins in Georgia: he was not present at the first session

On November 10, the Tbilisi City Court began hearing the case of former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.

The ex-president is accused in the case of dispersing an opposition rally in November 2007. Then the police used special means against the demonstrators, several hundred people were injured.

Saakashvili, who was under arrest, was not allowed to attend the first session of the court. The Special Penitentiary Service of Georgia reported that such a decision was made to ensure his safety.

“Saakashvili stopped treatment, and his transfer to the trial and his presence pose an additional risk to his health,” TASS quotes the statement of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia.

Let us remind you that Saakashvili was detained on October 1 in Georgia, where he returned after 8 years. After his arrest, the ex-president went on a hunger strike, and on the 39th day of the hunger strike he was transferred to a prison hospital, but Saakashvili refused to receive medical assistance.
