EU and UK cannot agree on the future of Northern Ireland amid Brexit

The European Union is unhappy with the situation that is emerging over the dispute with the UK over the future of Northern Ireland. EU warns London of “serious consequences”.

The British and Europeans are on the brink of a trade war after the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson was accused of lack of sincerity about negotiations over the future of Northern Ireland. European Commissioner Maros Sefchovic said that “Brussels has not seen any movement from the UK.”

Both sides have been negotiating for three weeks on changes to how the Brexit deal works to ensure free flow of trade between the UK and Northern Ireland. The EU has proposed halving customs controls and cutting the number of animal and plant health checks entering supermarkets by 80%, but Sefcovic suggested that Brexit Minister David Frost made meager efforts to participate in these proposals.

Shefchovic called on London to cooperate and said that the main goal should be to ensure stability and predictability for Northern Ireland.
