CIA Director William Burns came to Moscow to “warn” the Kremlin about the inadmissibility of action against Ukraine, CNN reports.
According to the TV channel, the visit of the head of the US Central Intelligence Agency was connected with Washington’s concerns about the movement of Russian troops near the borders with Ukraine.
“US President Joe Biden dispatched CIA Director Burns to Moscow this week to warn the Kremlin that the US is closely monitoring the increase in troop numbers near the border with Ukraine, and to try to determine what motivates Russia’s actions,” explains CNN.
Burns reportedly met with security officials in Moscow. The publication also said that after talks in the Kremlin, Burns held a telephone conversation with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, and on November 4, a State Department representative was sent to Kiev “for support.”
William Burns’ visit to Russia took place on November 2-3. In Moscow, he met with Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev and Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Sergei Naryshkin, RIA Novosti reports.
US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland visited Moscow last month.
