Yuri Vitrenko, the head of “Naftogaz” said that the termination of gas transit through Ukraine could lead to all-out war. He said this in an interview with the Financial Times
According to him, the termination of transit may untie Russia’s hands in the issue of a full-scale war, while the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will make Kiev even more vulnerable.
He believes that Russia is using Nord Stream-2 as a weapon by allegedly cutting off gas supplies to Europe. Vitrenko is confident that the launch of this pipeline will remove the last deterrent and make Ukraine more vulnerable to a full-scale “Russian invasion”.
“If there is no physical transit through Ukraine, it increases the chances of a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine with all its consequences”, – he said.
In his view, Russia’s demands on Germany and the desire to sign a new gas contract with the Moldovan government are grounds for sanctions against Nord Stream 2.
