US President Joe Biden held a meeting with acting German Chancellor Angela Merkel. They discussed support for Ukraine
This was reported by the Strana.ua edition, referring to the press service of the White House. The meeting of the two leaders was also attended by Olaf Scholz, who may take Merkel’s place as head of state.
Biden congratulated the Chancellor on her more than 16 years of running Germany. He also stressed that Merkel had played a crucial role for security, prosperity and the development of transatlantic relations.
However, Biden could not resist discussing Ukraine with Merkel:
“President Biden stressed the importance of continuing to work with Germany and the US to implement a joint statement of support for Ukraine and European energy security to ensure that Russia cannot manipulate the flow of natural gas for harmful political purposes.”
Apparently, the US president is worried that the country could change course politically following a change in Germany’s leadership. In addition, he clearly understands that Berlin is interested in relations with Moscow and is therefore trying to hold on to a story about an “aggressor” that needs to be confronted.
