The European Parliament (EP) decided to file a lawsuit against the European Commission (EC) due to the fact that the EC did not apply the law on freezing subsidies to Poland, writes Reuters.
Recall that at the end of 2020, the European Union’s rule of law mechanism was adopted, which provides for a reduction in funding from the joint budget of the organization to those countries in which “there is a threat of misuse of money due to violations of the rule of law.”
In turn, the authorities of Poland and Hungary have filed a lawsuit against the rule of law in the European Court of Justice, fearing that the new law could be applied against them. In early October, the Polish Constitutional Court recognized the supremacy of the constitutional law of the republic over the European one. According to the European Parliament, the EC should apply the provisions of the European Union’s rule of law to Poland, without waiting for a court verdict.
“Words must be followed by deeds,” said European Parliament President David Sassoli.
On October 27, the European Court ruled that Poland must pay 1 million euros daily due to Warsaw’s refusal to abolish the disciplinary chamber of the Supreme Court, which allegedly “threatens the independence and impartiality of judges.”
