Mikael Jonsson, a senior researcher at Sweden’s Total Defence Institute, called the joint military exercises of Sweden and the US using long-range artillery on the island of Gotland a clear signal to Russia, he said on SVT channel
The Swedish Armed Forces said on October 23 that a US Hercules aircraft with an M142 Himars wheeled multiple rocket launcher had landed in the country. The new weapon systems were tested during an exercise by the Swedish military and US special forces.
“This is a clear and clear signal designed to strengthen the deterrent against potential threats to Gotland”, – Jonsson said.
He said Russia was seen as the only threat to the kingdom, admitting that the country’s territory could come under attack by Himars.
“In my opinion, this is a way to raise the threshold of attack and signal the ability to defend and the intention to defend Gotland”, – the expert added.
