COVID-19 global incidence rises 4% in a week

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that the number of new cases of coronavirus infection increased by 4% to 2.9 million in seven days

“In the week from 18 to 24 October, the number of new infections globally increased slightly (by 4%) compared to the previous week. A total of more than 2.9 million new cases have been reported”, –  WHO said in its weekly epidemic bulletin.

It is noted that more than half of those infected are in the European region. In that region, an 18% increase in cases was seen over the past week, while Africa saw a 21% decline and the Western Pacific region a 17% drop in infections.

According to WHO, there has also been an increase in cases of infection with coronavirus infection in the under-24 age group, especially in Europe and the Western Pacific region. Experts note that this may be due to the fact that people in older age groups have already been vaccinated, as opposed to young people.
