Serbia should become part of EU – Swedish ambassador

Sweden’s new ambassador to Belgrade, Annika Ben David, has said that Sweden is firmly committed to Serbia’s European integration, Beta reports

The ambassador said she was pleased to see the annual EU report on Serbia’s progress, noting that there has been a decline in the issue of democracy, especially in the rule of law and the fight against corruption.

She added that media freedom and media pluralism were also areas where it was important to show progress.

“We think that Serbia is part of the European Union. Serbia is a European country that we should have in the Union. It would be good for the EU as well as for Serbia. The Embassy in Belgrade is Sweden’s third largest diplomatic mission in Europe”, –  the ambassador said.

The Ambassador emphasized that, in the past 20 years, Sweden has invested EUR 200 million in Serbia and has assisted Serbia in meeting EU requirements.
