Europe will not be able to completely replace gas with alternative sources – Gazprom

Elena Burmistrova, General Director of Gazprom Export, believes that the growth in gas consumption will be provided by the low-carbon hydrogen production sector, TASS reports.

Gas demand in Europe will decrease due to the transition to renewable energy sources, however, a complete rejection of the use of gas in the EU is excluded.

However, in the fall-winter season of 2020-2021, coal consumption in the power generation sector increased due to high gas prices and increased demand for electricity due to market factors.

“All this indicates that the decline of the coal era in Europe will not be as rapid as previously expected,” she concluded.

Elena Burmistrova also noted that European countries will begin the autumn-winter period with a shortage of gas in underground storage facilities. At the same time, the sharp rise in exchange prices for gas in Europe was caused by external factors, and not by the structure of the organization of the European gas market.
