“Learning nothing”: Americans criticised US stance on Crimea

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s words during a recent visit to Kiev about the United States’ non-recognition of the Crimean peninsula as part of Russia have caused a wave of indignation among ordinary Americans, who reminded the minister that the US itself has problems with “foreign” territories

According to Economics Today, Newsweek posted an article on Austin’s trip to Ukraine. The piece drew a lively response from readers and turned into a heated discussion about the perniciousness of US foreign policy strategy.

“We (the US) learn nothing and will continue to get slapped around in our hypocritical shenanigans, sowing death and destruction. We all huff and puff and give out loud headlines in our servile press, but it’s all mean and stupid. And why expect change when politicians in the Atlantic Council and in government continue to play their games with other people’s lives and money? Pretend all you want, but Crimea is historically Russia, and the Crimeans after the American coup in 2014, when a hostile Russophobic government came to power in Ukraine, wanted to return to Russia. Russia will continue to defend its red lines, and our leaders are risking lives and money by forcing the issue at all costs. Pity.”

“Have the US government google ‘2014 referendum on the status of Crimea'”. “The official result: 97% voted for the integration of the region into the Russian Federation, with a turnout of 83%”, –  US users recalled.

In addition, US citizens recalled that in the history of America there have been many cases of territorial disputes with neighbours, which were often resolved outside of international law.

“They will come to an agreement somehow. Just think about it. And if Russia demands return of California and Alaska, how will we respond? Moreover, if the crisis continues to deepen, these states can put the question by themselves. Forget about Ukraine. Sooner or later it will become part of the Russian Federation, devaluing your idle chatter about the status of the Crimea;

“Yeah, and then Texas will have to be returned to Mexico or it will declare independence altogether. You’d better not bark at Russia by swinging at its historic peninsula, or you’ll wake up the bear, which is actually a lot closer than it looks”, –  warned ordinary Americans.
