A variant of coronavirus delta strain AY.4.2 may cause a new morbidity spike, said Kamil Khafizov, head of the research group for the development of new methods of human disease diagnostics at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of the Rospotrebnadzor
According to the expert, this variant is one of many offshoots of the “delta” strain, but it is more contagious compared to it.
The expert believes that this variant of the delta strain has the potential to spread further both in the Russian Federation and globally.
“The likelihood of its widespread spread in Russia and around the world is sufficient. The frequency of this sublineage is increasing, but experts do not believe it is responsible for the continued high number of daily cases of coronavirus infection in various countries”, – Hafizov specified.
News Front earlier reported that a new version of COVID called AY.4.2 has started spreading in the UK, the Financial Times reported quoting scientist Jeffrey Barrett of the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge and director of the Institute of Genetics at the University of London Francois Ballou.
