Russian Foreign Ministry urges NATO to seek normalization of relations and not to stir up conflict

The Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the recent changes in relations with NATO and voiced the conditions for bringing them back to normal

Andrei Belousov, deputy head of the Russian delegation to the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, said that until the Alliance gives up the idea of “containing Moscow,” we can’t talk about restoring ties.

The diplomat stressed that NATO is regularly increasing its military potential and pulling its troops closer to Russia’s borders.

“We propose to agree on de-escalation measures, including mutual reduction of military activity along the borders of Russia and NATO countries, on improving mechanisms to prevent incidents and dangerous military activities”, –  he suggested during the committee meeting.

Belousov said that steps to improve the situation in the world, rather than inciting discord between countries, would now be much more in demand. Instead of pushing an aggressive agenda there should be agreement on measures of mutual transparency.
