The protesters say that they are categorically against the demands for the release of the former president of the country, Mikhail Saakashvili, TASS reports.
Several hundred opponents of the former leader of the country today are holding a protest rally outside the prison in the city of Rustavi, where Saakashvili is serving his sentence. The footage of the demonstration is broadcast live by the Georgian TV channel Imedi.
“Mikhail Saakashvili will never become a political prisoner, he is a real criminal who penetrated Georgia as a terrorist. He didn’t even have the courage to cross the border”, Tornike Molashvili, brother of the former head of the Chamber of Control Sulkhan Molashvili, who was detained and tortured during the presidency of Saakashvili, addressed the protesters.
Near the prison, car traffic was blocked, reinforced police squads were on the spot.
The ex-president of Georgia was detained on October 1 and is now being held in the prison of the city of Rustavi, where he went on a hunger strike, because he considers himself a political prisoner.
