Losses of Ukraine from untimely purchase of gas amount to $5 billion

The current government should be held responsible for the fact that it did not buy gas at a lower price and is now overpaying.

This was stated by the former Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
Emphasizing that the losses to the state in connection with such actions amounted to $ 5 billion.

“Today, Ukrainians will be pulled out of their pockets – think about this figure – $ 5 billion. These are losses of the state and the state company NAK Naftogaz due to the fact that when it was necessary to buy [gas] at $ 250 [per thousand cubic meters. m], they didn’t buy it, but now they have to buy it at $ 1,200 [per thousand cubic meters. m]. $ 5 billion is an amount equivalent to total annual defense spending”, Yatsenyuk says.

He recalled that Ukraine has one of the largest underground gas storage facilities in Europe and could afford to pump gas for future use.

“How could we insure ourselves against paying Russia almost $ 2 thousand per thousand cubic meters? m of gas? The key formula is that you had to buy gas when it cost $250 [per thousand cubic meters. m]. Not everyone could afford it, because not everyone has gas storage facilities. Ukraine has one of the largest gas storages in Europe, the accounts of Naftogaz had $ 2 billion. With this money it was possible to buy a sufficient volume of gas and pump it into storage”, he said.

Yatsenyuk believes that the increased gas prices are “speculation organized by the Russian Gazprom,” but stressed that the current government should be responsible for the current situation in Ukraine.

“The current government of Ukraine bears personal responsibility for this,” he is sure.

Speaking about further actions, the ex-prime minister proposed to the Ukrainian parliament to create an investigative commission, which should find out “on whose order $ 5 billion was pulled out of the pockets of the Ukrainians.” In addition, he believes, the country should buy additional blue fuel, but for this, according to him, “it is still necessary to find a physical volume of gas.”
