Wu Jianjian, adviser to China’s Permanent Mission to the UN, speaking at the UN General Assembly’s First Committee on Arms Control, said the US, UK and Australian agreement to build AUKUS nuclear submarines contradicted the spirit of the nuclear non-proliferation treaties
“The nuclear submarine arrangements between the US, Australia and Britain are contrary to the spirit of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty”, – he said. – “Such moves will lead to an arms race and increase tensions in the region. The double standards of US and UK nuclear cooperation will inevitably lead to negative consequences for the political and diplomatic resolution of nuclear non-proliferation issues in the Asia-Pacific region.”
“The international community has every reason to question Australia on how serious it is in meeting its non-proliferation obligations”, – the diplomat added.
