The interior ministers of 12 EU member states, including Poland, Greece and Lithuania, have asked Brussels to finance the installation of physical barriers to combat illegal migration, DW reported
In a letter sent to the European Commission on Thursday, October 7, the domestic heads of state said the move was necessary as part of reforms to counter attempts by EU neighbouring countries to use migrants as weapons.
“A physical barrier”, the letter noted, looks to be an “effective way of securing borders”, that is in the interest of the entire EU, not just those member states that are the first countries of arrival for migrants.
“This legitimate measure should receive additional and adequate funding from the EU budget as a matter of priority”, – the ministers wrote.
The document was signed by the ministers of interior of Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia.
