The US Senate approved a draft law to temporarily raise the government debt ceiling, thus preventing the theoretical possibility of default. The document was supported by 50 senators, 48 opposed, RIA Novosti reports.
According to the document, the ceiling of the national debt will be increased by $480 billion until December 3, while negotiations are underway between representatives of the Republican and Democratic parties.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she is ready to withdraw the House from vacation to pass the bill. The White House stressed that American leader Joe Biden will endorse the document as soon as it is approved by both houses of Congress.
The US Treasury noted that an increase in the ceiling of public debt by 480 billion will be one of the steps that will prevent the country’s first national debt default. Earlier, the head of department Janet Yellen warned Congress about the threat of default and the accompanying “irreparable damage” to the country’s economy.
