USS Connecticut (SSN 22) nuclear attack submarine collided with an unknown object while diving in the Indo-Pacific. 11 crew members were moderately and lightly injured.
“USS Connecticut (SSN 22) collided with an object during a dive on the afternoon of October 2 in international waters in the Indo-Pacific. The crew has no life-threatening injuries”, the press service of the US Pacific Fleet said.
According to Fox News, the incident took place in the South China Sea. It is also noted that the American submarine independently returns to the port. The press service stressed that “the safety of the crew remains the top priority of the Navy.”
“The USS Connecticut nuclear power plant and compartments have not been damaged and remain fully functional. The degree of damage to other parts of the submarine is currently being assessed”, the US Pacific Fleet said.
According to a source in the Military Times newspaper, “the topography of the area at the time of the collision did not indicate the presence of a land mass in front of the submarine,” and there are no signs that “the incident was of a hostile nature”.
