US deports more than six thousand migrants to Haiti

US authorities have deported more than six thousand migrants to Haiti between September 19 and October 1, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM)

According to the IOM, since September 19, US migration authorities have deported 6,213 Haitian migrants by air from the country. 52% of those deported were men, 26% were women and 22% were minors.

The Washington Post earlier reported that US authorities fear that migrants may head to Mexico or try to stay in the United States illegally to avoid deportation.

Haitian nationals are fleeing their country because of a prolonged economic and political crisis as well as high crime rates. The coronavirus pandemic has significantly worsened the situation and has forced many Haitians to seek asylum in the United States
