Police in India have used standard bamboo sticks and water cannons to disperse farmers
Farmers reportedly started mass protests following the decision of the Indian authorities to postpone government procurement of rice in the states of Haryana and Punjab till October 11.
One such protest started in Panchkula town square. Farmers stationed themselves outside the offices of the state leaders.
According to a source, thousands of farmers broke through police barriers and gathered near the residence of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
“There are heaps of rice in mandis (special agricultural markets) but the government is not ready to buy it. The 11-day delay in buying rice means the government is trying to avoid government procurement. The doubts of farmers who have been struggling on the roads for the past year seem to be coming true”, – stressed a spokesperson for the protesters.
