The European Union is planning to set up a military training mission to Ukraine. This was suggested by Welt am Sonntag, citing documents from the European External Action Service (EEAS)
Portal 112 reported that they said that the establishment of the mission should be an “expression of solidarity” with Ukraine. Brussels cites “Russian aggression” as the main reason for its decision.
The project will be called the EU Military Advisory and Training Mission Ukraine (EUATM).
Furthermore, the EU is not going to limit itself to this mission. Josep Borrell, head of European diplomacy, mentions three ways in which it could “contribute to improving the capabilities of the Ukrainian army”. Brussels is considering expanding the EUAT (Advisory Mission for Civilian Security Sector Reform), which has been in place since 2014.
The document has already been discussed at the level of the Political and Security Committee (PSC). The Baltic States, Poland, Romania and Slovakia are the countries that are pushing most for the creation of this mission.
