UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said in an interview with the Associated Press that relations between the US and China need to be restored and called for avoiding a “cold war”
Guterres said confrontation was inevitable on some issues – human rights, a number of geostrategic issues such as the situation in the South China Sea.
“There are also issues where I think interests coincide and where there should be close cooperation – such as the climate. And then there are issues where serious negotiations are needed: trade and technology. Unfortunately, right now there is only confrontation. It is necessary to restore functional relations between the two states”, – the UN Secretary General stressed.
The UN Secretary General believes that things are now heading towards a new Cold War and this must be avoided.
“We need to avoid at all costs a cold war, which will be different from the past and probably more difficult to manage”, – Guterres concluded.
