The EU court sentenced Poland to pay 500 thousand euros daily as a fine until the termination of coal mining at the Turov mine, RIA Novosti reports.
“Poland was sentenced to pay the European Commission a daily fine of 500 thousand euros. Such a measure seems to be necessary in order to enhance the effectiveness of temporary measures in accordance with the decree of May 21, 2021”, the document says. V
According to the court, such a fine should force Poland to reconsider its attitude to the court’s decision to suspend the operation of the mine. The fine must be paid from the moment Poland is notified until it has complied with the judgment.
Earlier, the EU court, at the request of the Czech Republic, ordered the Polish side to immediately stop all work at the mine. Prague opposes the expansion of the mine, as it could lower the water table and create problems with water supply to nearby areas and damage the environment. The Czech Republic demanded to impose a fine on Warsaw in the amount of 5 million euros per day.
