Taliban* set up ministry to prevent vice in Afghanistan

The Taliban*, who seized power in Afghanistan, liquidated the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and created a department for “promoting virtue and preventing vices” on its basis. It is reported by the BBC.

The ministry’s sign was removed on Friday and replaced by the ministry of virtue and vice, according to the BBC. Earlier, when the Taliban* were in power, such a department already existed in Afghanistan. It promoted strict religious doctrines and imposed restrictions on the lives of women in the country.

“Human rights groups have previously criticized the Ministry of Virtue and Vice for suppressing dissent, forcibly placing restrictions on citizens, especially women and girls, and spreading fear and mistrust in all communities,” the newspaper writes.

Over the past 20 years, Afghan women have fought hard for their rights and there is now a danger that the new Taliban * interim government, which is exclusively male, will impede progress in the country.

“The main goal is to serve Islam. Therefore, it is imperative to have a ministry of vice and virtue”, Taliban spokesman* Mohammad Yusuf told the New York Post.
