The US Department of Defense acknowledged that the August 29 US drone strike in Kabul, which killed 10 civilians, was a mistake.
“At the moment, I can confidently say that at least 10 civilians, including up to seven children, were tragically killed in this strike,” said General Kenneth McKenzie, head of the US Army Central Command (CENTCOM).
According to him, the Pentagon considers it unlikely that as a result of this operation, persons associated with the Islamic State in Khorasan* group, which are “an immediate threat to US forces”, were eliminated.
“Our investigation has led to the conclusion that the strike was a tragic mistake,” Mackenzie said.
The head of CENTCOM added that the Pentagon is studying the possibility of compensation payments to the relatives of those killed in the impact. He noted that it will be difficult for Washington to establish contact with the relatives of those killed in Afghanistan, since the United States no longer has a presence in the republic.
