US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson have announced a new trilateral security partnership, AUKUS, it is reported
“Although the Australia, UK and US partnership – AUKUS – sounds strange with all those acronyms, it’s a good thing… Our countries will renew and strengthen our shared ability to face 21st century threats in the same way we did in the 20th century: together”, – Biden said during a joint presentation of the new alliance.
The Australian prime minister said “the world is increasingly complex”, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.
To “help provide the security and stability that our region needs, we must now take our partnership to the next level”, – he said.
The leaders said the new AUKUS alliance would be able to protect the three countries’ interests in the Indo-Pacific region and allow Australia to build nuclear-powered submarines for the first time, forgoing the need to procure them from France.
