A group of Democratic congressmen have sent a letter to US President Joe Biden’s administration calling for cuts in spending on nuclear weapons
The senators noted that the budget request for fiscal year 2022 is not in line with efforts to reduce the country’s reliance on such weapons, RT reports.
The congressmen gratefully recalled Joe Biden’s “years-long efforts” to reduce the likelihood of nuclear war and reduce the role of nuclear weapons in US security policy.
However, parliamentarians expressed grave concern that the 2022 budget request did not reflect this policy on nuclear weapons.
“This budget provides for the use of $634 billion over ten years to restore all delivery vehicles, weapons and warheads in the US nuclear arsenal”, – the letter writers said.
They said the draft budget maintains or increases spending on every nuclear weapons programme proposed by former US leader Donald Trump’s administration.
“We ask you to reverse the Trump administration’s decisions to increase spending on expensive, unnecessary and very dangerous nuclear weapons”, – the lawmakers stressed.
The senators called on the US president to establish a nuclear weapons strategy that would limit the role of such weapons in national security matters and “reduce unnecessary spending”, and “lay the groundwork for implementing… recent agreements with Russian President Vladimir Putin to establish additional arms control.”
