Former Pentagon official accused Russia of preparing an offensive on NATO

The active modernization of the Russian Armed Forces indicates an increase in the military threat, said the vice-president of the Lexington Institute in Virginia and former Pentagon employee Daniel Goure, RIA Novosti reports.

Gure noted that regular improvement in the skill of rapidly deploying troops along the western part of the Russian border will allow for quick attacks “anywhere from the Baltic to the Black Sea.”

“Moscow is launching a ‘nationwide’ attack on the alliance,” the ex-Pentagon official said in an interview with 19fortyfive.

In his opinion, the North Atlantic Alliance may not have enough time to mobilize and send its troops to defend the eastern flank. Earlier it became known that Russia will create twenty new military units in the western part of the country. In this regard, experts from the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) have proposed several steps for a consistent policy in this region.

NATO offered to recognize the strategic importance of the Black Sea region, increase situational awareness and readiness to take rapid political and military steps in response to possible provocations. In addition, the center’s experts called for support to the partners of the organization in the region, namely Ukraine and Georgia, “while increasing investments in their economic development.”
