Oleksiy Belov: Brussels benefits from holding Ukraine back by talking about joining NATO

The political observer of News Front commented on the new statement of the official representative of the North Atlantic bloc in Kiev

As reported by News Front news agency, on Tuesday, in an interview with European Pravda, the head of the NATO mission in Kiev, Alexander Vinnikov, said that the war in Donbas would not be a stumbling block for Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
In Vinnikov’s opinion, the Washington accord does not contain a direct provision prohibiting the already warring states from considering membership in the alliance. At the same time, the NATO representative stressed that accession of any country to NATO should be primarily considered in the context of strengthening the bloc itself, and not only to protect the interests of new members.

Our political observer Alexey Belov commented on Vinnikov’s statement specially for News Front news agency.

“I did not expect other words from NATO official representative in Kiev. If his purpose was to tell the truth that Ukraine has no real perspectives to join the Alliance, there would be no point in his permanent residence in the Ukrainian capital. But as it is, he says exactly what the politicians in Kiev are waiting to hear from him, – the expert noted, – But it is also important to understand that such rhetoric is beneficial for the Alliance itself. Brussels continues to keep Ukraine within its sphere of influence by telling it that accession is a possibility. Remember, like the parable of the donkey who is forced to go forward by a carrot attached to a string. And like that carrot, the prospect of NATO membership has consistently remained as unattainable a goal for Kiev. But they don’t seem to understand it, or don’t want to.”
