Ukraine urged Biden to change approach to Nord Stream-2

The letter was signed by about three dozen former and current deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, ex-officials of the country and representatives of public organizations.

According to TASS, a letter addressed to the head of the White House and published on the website of the Washington Atlantic Council says that a group of Ukrainian political and public figures criticized the agreements between the United States and Germany regarding the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project and called on American leader Joe Biden to change the approach to this issue.

The authors of the message emphasize that they were “encouraged” by Biden’s victory in the 2020 US presidential election, as he promised “to be tough on Russia and to do everything to stop [construction] of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.”

“Today, these hopes are dashed by your administration’s decision to oppose sanctions and give the green light to Nord Stream-2, which allows the Kremlin to complete it,” the letter says.

The significant US contribution to the transatlantic security and transformation of Ukraine and does not imply any effective security guarantees for the countries affected by this project.

According to their version, “if the Nord Stream-2 starts operating, Ukraine will lose a key means of deterring the growing aggression on the part of Russia.”

The authors of the message call on Biden “to change course and give a clear message to President Putin that America supports Ukraine and the entire world community of democracies.”
