Pentagon banned US military bases in Europe from purchasing energy resources from Russia

According to TASS, the US Department of Defense, in pursuance of the provisions of the defense budget for the 2020 fiscal year (starting on October 1), has banned American military bases in Europe from purchasing energy resources from Russia.

“The Department of Defense is publishing the final rule amending the annex to the Federal Defense Procurement Regulations (DFARS) to ensure implementation of the FY2020 defense budget section. This section prohibits the conclusion of contracts for the purchase of energy resources supplied from the Russian Federation for military facilities in Europe”, says the notice posted in the Federal Register.

The Defense Ministry stressed that “Section 2821 prohibits the use of energy resources received from the Russian Federation in order to strengthen energy security in Europe.” However, the document allows possible exceptions to the rules. In addition, the ban applies only to “Europe, but not Asia (for example, those parts of Turkey that are in Asia)”.
