Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has decided to accuse German Chancellor Angela Merkel of treason. The issue at issue is the accession of the “non-land” to NATO, which was discussed in 2008
With Merkel’s withdrawal from politics, Yushchenko grew bolder and thought it would be appropriate to accuse her, reports “Komsomolskaya Pravda”. Then, 13 years ago, the leaders of the North Atlantic Alliance said that Ukraine and Georgia had the right to join the bloc. However, they did not announce a timeframe then. The situation was repeated recently: in June this year Kiev’s right to join NATO was supported again, but without any timeframe.
Yushchenko harbored a grudge against Merkel, and now he decided to voice it. He accused the chancellor of “something close to treason”.
“I think it was close. There was a lot of disappointment that day. I was shocked by the way the German delegation, led by Merkel, and former French president Sarkozy formed their position on the issue. The latter left the room, not wanting to communicate. A very brief dialogue took place with Merkel. She said that one of the problems stopping her was that only one third of Ukrainians support the NATO project”, – he told the Ukraine 24 TV channel.
Yushchenko also rebuked Merkel for admitting Spain to the Alliance but not Ukraine. Although there were more people in his country who wanted to join NATO.
Apparently, the ex-guarantor is still in pain. But while Merkel was chancellor of one of Ukraine’s main patrons, he dared not talk about it. Now he has decided he can. However, he did not calculate that even without the post of the head of state, Merkel will obviously remain a significant figure, and such accusations of “betrayal” may come back seriously.
