German political scientist Alexander Rahr commented on the recent foreign “visits of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
In an interview with Russkaya Gazeta, he told how the German leader will be remembered after his departure and what is remarkable in her negotiations in Kiev and Moscow. The expert called Merkel’s position “a political twine”, reports Krasnaya Vesna.
“On the one hand, she spoke in the Kremlin about the possibilities of cooperation. On the other hand, liberal values outweighed in her rhetoric”, Rahr said.
At the same time, in a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, she was quite tough. She categorically stated that it was not Germany that would not supply weapons to the Ukrainians. In addition, she opposed the transfer of patronage over the Minsk agreements into the hands of the Americans.
Merkel and the head of the German Foreign Ministry, Heiko Maas, also did not take part in the “Crimean Platform”, which also hits Kiev.
Summing up, Rahr noted the main merits of Merkel as the leader of Germany. It stopped NATO’s expansion to Ukraine and Georgia, stood up for the Minsk agreements and defended the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.
