This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing Merkel’s speech at a campaign event in Berlin. She stressed that the CDU/CSU had nominated a federal chancellor for more than 50 years.
“This is a reason to fight so that these years in power will be followed by more years. That is what we are working for. For our country, for the CDU/CSU, with Armin Lachet – the future chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany”, – Merkel said.
According to her, Lachet has qualities that she appreciates very much in him: “a primary focus on the dignity of people, on building bridges between them.”
The Bundestag elections will be held in Germany on September 26. They will be followed by the formation of a new government and the election of a chancellor. Angela Merkel herself will end her political career after these elections.
