The German government has appointed Georg Waldersee as Commissioner for Gas Transit for Ukraine. Deutsche Welle reports that it will act as an intermediary.
Waldersee previously served as the Federal Government’s authorized representative for gas transit by Ukraine in 2019, when negotiations were underway to extend the transit contract.
The German Ministry of Economy and Energy said the country will make efforts to “continue the gas transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia for up to ten years” to ensure transit after the expiration of the current contract, which expires at the end of 2024.
The Commissioner will act as a mediator and consultant for both parties and with the European Commission, the United States and third countries in order to achieve an extension of the gas transit contract.
Earlier in Germany, it was admitted that the new government could abandon Nord Stream 2 if the Greens party dominates the political forces.
