The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced that the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his family have been granted political asylum.
“The UAE received President Ashraf Ghani and his family in the country on humanitarian grounds,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Ghani fled Kabul hours before he was captured by the Taliban. The President stressed that he left the territory of Afghanistan in order to stop the bloodshed. According to KabulNews, the president of the republic arrived in Oman from Tajikistan. The Hasht e Subh Daily newspaper indicated that Ghani flew to Oman from Uzbekistan.
Together with Ashraf Ghani, his wife Rula Ghani and two other people, including his adviser, left Kabul. According to Bloomberg, members of the coordinating council for a peaceful transfer of power allegedly offered Ghani to resign in favor of the council and in the interests of a peaceful transition of power, but he refused.
